Adding torrent trackers manually to resolve slow downloading torrents is beginning to become a lot more known by people overall it seems every year. Sometimes, there are not enough people (a seed or a peer) connected to you, which means that as a result your download speed will not be maximised. In the BitTorrent protocol, a seed is a computer that has a complete copy of the file or files being shared via the torrent and is uploading (seeding) those files to other clients. A seed can also be thought of as a source of the file being shared.

A peer, on the other hand, is a computer that is downloading the file or files being shared via the torrent and is also uploading (sharing) them with other clients. Peers are also known as leeches, as they are downloading the file from seeds and other peers.

In a BitTorrent download, seeds and peers work together to share the file or files being downloaded. Seeds provide a complete copy of the file to peers, while peers download pieces of the file from seeds and other peers and then share those pieces with other peers. This process helps to distribute the load of the download and allows for faster download speeds.

Each peer and seed will be announced via a torrent tracker. Adding more trackers means that potentially a higher number of seeds and peers will become available to you. Each seed or peer may start uploading pieces of the file(s) to you, meaning that you will ultimately have a higher download speed for that torrent.

First of all, I will add that by default, there will be a (limited) set of torrent trackers available for each torrent download. The torrent file or magnet URI contains some metadata: one of which is the torrent tracker list for that particular torrent. The goal here is to manually add more torrent trackers (which will hopefully ultimately increase your speeds).

How you add the lits of torrent trackers will depend slightly on the torrent program of your choice. The most popular torrent downloading programs all are using a similar layout and the steps are roughly the same to follow (e.g. popular torrent downloading programs include qBittorrent, uTorrent, Deluge, BitTorrent, Vuze, Transmission).

First of all: a torrent tracker is not something optional in the BitTorrent world. Without trackers, you would not be able to start your downloads. It means that your torrent will be stuck at 0% because it cannot find any seeds or peers. If you add a torrent to your torrent program by downloading a .torrent file or clicking a magnet link, it will already contain a reference to 1 or a small list of trackers.

So by adding (more) trackers, your downloads will not get stuck at zero percent (or somewhere in the middle). Secondly, your overall downloads speed will increase, so that in the end your downloads will finish quickly.

Adding new trackers (coming from the torrent tracker list below) to your torrent program is relatively easy. But, it depends on your preferred program how it works exactly. The principle of adding trackers is the same for all programs though, so if you follow below steps, you should be able to replicate these steps for your program.

If you followed these simple steps, you should have succesfully added the trackers for your torrent. You should note that these steps should be repeated for every torrent file you are downloading. Now the torrent download should start to add more seeds and peers, this is because the new trackers will keep track of more connected users who are also downloading and uploading the concerned torrent file.
